12 goals, $120,000 for charity

A goal can make the difference between a win or a loss.  Or in our case, more or less money for an Italian children’s sports center.

Every goal that AC Milan star Ronaldinho scored this season meant another $10,000 to fund the center, thanks to Nutrilite.  This year Ronaldinho scored 11 goals in regulation play plus a ceremonial goal to kick-off the program.  This month we gave  $120,000 to an AC Milan Foundation fund that will build a sports center in the Italian city of L’Aquila in Pagliara di Sassa - topping last year’s donation of $100,000.

Ronaldinho scored big.  But the real winners are the kids who’ll have a place to play.

This is just part of our relationship with AC Milan.  To learn more, check out the trailer below.

Competitive advantage

Every  team needs an advantage over the competition.

For the players of AC Milan, one such advantage is MilanLab, an interdisciplinary research center dedicated to preventing injury and optimizing the performance of team members.

Since 2008, Nutrilite has been the institutional sponsor and official dietary supplement brand of AC Milan and has worked with MilanLab to create individual nutritional profiles and recommendations for players.  It’s all part of a philosophy of creating a personalized program for each player to help them achieve optimal health and performance.

Last week MilanLab invited international media to learn how Nutrilite has been a part of the center’s efforts.  MilanLab’s Daniele Tognaccini  talked about how “Nutrilite perfectly met our need” as a partner in the centre’s work.  Team Nutrilite spokesperson and AC Milan star Ronaldinho shared how important what MilanLab and Nutrilite is doing to improve the health and well being of athletes and people from all walks of life.

That’s in addition to helping provide a competitive advantage for the world’s most successful soccer team.

‘Little Lightning’ strikes

Yesterday’s Amway Cup final match was a nail-biter, with Yu Ram Cha of Korea facing off against Taiwan’s Shu-Han Chang. In the end, Yu Ram Cha came from behind - way behind - to take home the 2010 Women’s 9-ball World Championship trophy.

Yu Ram’s nickname on the Women’s Professional Billards Association Tour is “Little Lightning”, and she says a “killer instinct” is her advantage when playing the game.  In 2008, at age 21, she was named Billiards Digest’s ‘Breakthrough Player of the Year.’  At 22, she has placed as high as fifth in women’s world rankings.

It’s quite the list of accomplishments for this petite professional, and we hope to see her back next year - Amway’s fourteenth of sponsoring this stunning competition.

We’re not scared

This weekend, women with nicknames like the Irish Invader, Duchess of Doom, and Little Devil Girl are convening on Taipei, Taiwan. We’ll be there, too.

For the 13th year, Amway is sponsoring the World Pool Billiards Association’s (WPBA) Women’s 9-Ball Open. It’s an annual, international tournament with qualifying rounds beginning on February 28 and the final match airing on the Videoland Television Network on March 7.

The Amway Cup tournament has worldwide appeal with a majority of its fans in Japan, Taiwan and the Phillippines.  Top players in this year’s joust include Karen Corr (the aforementioned Irish Invader) and Kelly Fisher of Ireland; Liu Shin-Mei and Chou Chieh-Yu of Taiwan; Jamin Ouschan of Austria; Allison (Duchess of Doom) Fisher of Great Britain; Japan’s Akimi Kajatani; and Pan Xiaoting and Liu Sha Sha of China.

Once dubbed the “noble game of billiards,” because it was originally played by European royalty, pool hit mainstream by the year 1600.

It’s an established sport full of fearless women. But when it comes to this enduring Amway sponsorship, we’re far from scared.

Who we’re watching in Vancouver

While the eyes of the world are on Vancouver this week and next, we’re watching one athlete in particular - Yuki Nofuji.

That’s because Yuki is not just a top snowboarder representing Japan - he’s also an Amway distributor.

Yuki competes in the men’s parallel giant slalom on February 27. We’ll be watching to cheer him on, along with his friends at Amway Japan.

Ronaldinho scores big for kids

AC Milan forward and global soccer star Ronaldinho is proving to be worthy of the Golden Foot award he received late last year in more ways than one.  With a hat trick in the January 17 match against Siena, he brought the construction of a children’s sports center $30,000 closer to reality.

That’s because each time Ronaldinho scores a goal, the Amway One by One Campaign for Children contributes $10,000 to the AC Milan Foundation which will fund the recreational center for children affected by the devastation of the April 2009 earthquake in the Abruzzi region of Italy.  A member of Team Nutrilite, Ronaldinho has already helped to raise $120,000 in the 2009-10 season—11 goals from play, plus one ceremonial half-time goal that kicked off the joint Nutrilite and AC Milan “Goal by Goal” program.

What’s more, Ronaldinho has surpassed the $100,000 he and Nutrilite donated last season.  And there’s still four months left in season play.

That makes every goal he scores truly worth its weight in gold.

Do you believe in Magic?

Amway does. So much so that starting today we’re sponsoring Orlando Magic training camps and player practice jerseys.  It’s the the first season in which the National Basketball Association has granted permission to have a sponsorship presence on team practice jerseys, and we’re stepping up to the line.

We’ve also stepped up our presence in Orlando. As announced earlier this year, Amway acquired the naming rights to the new Amway Center, scheduled to open in the fall of 2010. In addition to being the home court for the Orlando Magic, Amway Center will play host to an array of national events, concerts and family shows.

Our chief marketing officer Candace Matthews calls this a unique opportunity to build pride in the Amway business around the world. “Both Amway and the Magic have fans around the world, and in both organizations, we are committed to the hard work it takes to succeed.”

The Amway-tagged jerseys will be worn during Magic training camps, regular-season practices, post-season practices and pre-game shoot-arounds.

Between the jerseys, training camps, and Amway Center opening next year, Amway’s going to be hard to miss in Orlando.

Keeping score: Amway and the AC Milan-LA Galaxy match July 19

When AC Milan and the LA Galaxy play on Sunday, July 19, there will be talk about soccer superstars Ronaldinho and David Beckham facing off.

For us, it’s not just a battle of soccer titans but a battle of brands and how Amway plans to score with customers.

Let us explain. Amway’s not taking the field, but we’re on the bench for AC Milan. That’s because Amway’s NUTRILITE™ brand is the “Official Nutrition Supplement” of AC Milan, dubbed the “World’s Most Successful Soccer Club.”

And, AC Milan soccer superstar Ronaldinho is part of Amway’s Team Nutrilite and global spokesperson for Amway’s One by One Campaign. He’s been called one of the top soccer players in the world.

Our AC Milan and Ronaldinho sponsorships are part of a company strategy to reach the millions of soccer fans worldwide with our health and wellness message.

As for the battle of the brands, AC Milan will face the Herbalife-sponsored LA Galaxy. Herbalife is a direct selling competitor of Amway’s.

To help us spread the world about our brands to potential customers, we’ve invited bloggers covering the game to learn more about NUTRILITE. They’ll have access to NUTRILITE experts and get exclusive tours of our facilities, in addition to meeting with AC Milan.

And while the game’s sold out, our customers can follow real-time updates on what’s happening on the field and behind-the-scenes at our official NUTRILITE Facebook page and Twitter feed.

A.C. Milan vs. L.A. Galaxy

It’s all part of our strategy of using soccer to score with consumers. Game on!

Marta mania

Three-time FIFA Women’s Player of the Year and ESPY award nominee for Best Female International Athlete, Marta is the new epicenter of Amway’s Nutrilite and Artistry brand marketing.

“Marta embodies everything the Amway Global business stands for in terms of helping people set and achieve goals to reach their own personal level of success,” said Jori Hartwig, vice president of marketing for Amway’s North American operations.

The ESPY nomination is well-deserved for the Los Angeles Sol forward. Says Marta:

“I want to be a role model for others and help them achieve a healthy lifestyle and go after their dreams, just like I’ve done for myself.”

Tune in to ESPN Sunday, July 19 at 9 p.m. ET to see if Marta takes home the award!

Score with Amway

ScoreWithAmway.comIt has come to our attention that a certain arena bearing our name in Orlando will be part of tonight’s televisied NBA Finals at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

And by “come to our attention” we mean that we have been downright giddy just thinking about hearing and seeing “Amway Arena” on camera and from the mouths of fans and commentators.

So much so that we decided to track the number of Amway mentions tonight, as well as Thurs., June 11 and, if necessary, June 14. We even launched a new blog today to help keep score. An Amway Arena placard on the scoreboard? That counts. Anything from tip-off to final buzzer—and we’re asking our friends, employees, customers and distributors to help.

Tune in and take a guess!
