Designated Twitter

It’s only natural that we have baseball on our minds this week.

But every week, we’re thinking Twitter. We’ve seen people use it to find each other during disasters, raise millions, and spread urgent news around the globe.

We Tweet to engage with people interested in our business opportunity and product brands — our Amway Business Owners, media, customers, and sometimes, critics.

twitter_birdYou’ll find enough Amway handles on Twitter to load the bases at several ballparks, but here’s our official line-up:

Follow us. Cheer us on. And by all means, play furious-fan-who-yells-at-referee if we deserve it.

This is one game where the followers can—and should—frolic on the field.

Down under connections

When it comes to getting connected, Amway Australia/New Zealand has the hook up.

Amway has teamed up with one of the world’s largest mobile phone companies, Vodafone, to provide service to New Zealand Independent Business Owners. Vodafone will better equip Amway business owners when connecting to their customers.

And the company’s got some high profile connections as well. A recent advertorial in The Australian linked the company to sprint star Libby Trickett and cricket player Adam Gilchrist and connected Aussies to the company, products, and business opportunity.

Our Australian PR mate Kevin Lowe began blogging earlier this year to share a down under perspective on Amway’s 50th anniversary events in the U.S. Now Kev is at it again, blogging about Amway Australia/New Zealand’s Achievers event in Tokyo. That’ll keep all of us connected with what’s going on at the business recognition event.

Connecting with customers and business owners is what we’re all about - down under or wherever we operate.

Keeping score: Amway and the AC Milan-LA Galaxy match July 19

When AC Milan and the LA Galaxy play on Sunday, July 19, there will be talk about soccer superstars Ronaldinho and David Beckham facing off.

For us, it’s not just a battle of soccer titans but a battle of brands and how Amway plans to score with customers.

Let us explain. Amway’s not taking the field, but we’re on the bench for AC Milan. That’s because Amway’s NUTRILITE™ brand is the “Official Nutrition Supplement” of AC Milan, dubbed the “World’s Most Successful Soccer Club.”

And, AC Milan soccer superstar Ronaldinho is part of Amway’s Team Nutrilite and global spokesperson for Amway’s One by One Campaign. He’s been called one of the top soccer players in the world.

Our AC Milan and Ronaldinho sponsorships are part of a company strategy to reach the millions of soccer fans worldwide with our health and wellness message.

As for the battle of the brands, AC Milan will face the Herbalife-sponsored LA Galaxy. Herbalife is a direct selling competitor of Amway’s.

To help us spread the world about our brands to potential customers, we’ve invited bloggers covering the game to learn more about NUTRILITE. They’ll have access to NUTRILITE experts and get exclusive tours of our facilities, in addition to meeting with AC Milan.

And while the game’s sold out, our customers can follow real-time updates on what’s happening on the field and behind-the-scenes at our official NUTRILITE Facebook page and Twitter feed.

A.C. Milan vs. L.A. Galaxy

It’s all part of our strategy of using soccer to score with consumers. Game on!

Score with Amway

ScoreWithAmway.comIt has come to our attention that a certain arena bearing our name in Orlando will be part of tonight’s televisied NBA Finals at 9 p.m. ET on ABC.

And by “come to our attention” we mean that we have been downright giddy just thinking about hearing and seeing “Amway Arena” on camera and from the mouths of fans and commentators.

So much so that we decided to track the number of Amway mentions tonight, as well as Thurs., June 11 and, if necessary, June 14. We even launched a new blog today to help keep score. An Amway Arena placard on the scoreboard? That counts. Anything from tip-off to final buzzer—and we’re asking our friends, employees, customers and distributors to help.

Tune in and take a guess!

…and the day’s not over yet. Oh, and Doug is right: we are just getting started.

Our newest blogger, Kev from Down Under

Amway of Australia and New Zealand blogKevin Lowe, PR lead for Amway of Australia and Amway New Zealand, is with us this week for the 50th anniversary celebration.

He just launched the official blog for his home markets and is busy capturing the tales of Amway leaders from around the world as they tour Amway World Headquarters here in Ada as well as surrounding Grand Rapids.

Welcome aboard, Kev!

Tweeting the 50th

50 Years of AmwayYou can follow our 50th anniversary festivities throughout today, next week and the remainder of the year at @Amway50 on Twitter, where we’ll post links to interviews, photos and podcasts.

RT (”retweet”) us if you like. DM (”direct message”) us if you wish.

And yes, we believe it’s a #followfriday kind of day for our fellow “tweeps” out there.

Social butterflies

The heart of today’s business world is aflutter with social media. You could even say “a Twitter.”

Not too far from our world headquarters, the Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park is featuring its annual spring butterfly exhibit, where visitors may freely mingle with approximately 6,000 butterflies of all sizes and species.

How might Meijer Gardens build some buzz around the event? Like butterflies, they get social. They regularly blog and are on several social networks such as Flickr, Facebook and Twitter.

And good for Meijer Gardens: Earlier today, comscore blogged that Twitter traffic in the United States increased by 131 percent in March to 9.3 million visitors. Twitter has 5-10 million active users (current estimates vary and Twitter keeps you guessing), far more than the “maybe a million” figure conjectured last year. Who wouldn’t want in on that?

We tweet, sure. You can officially follow us at @amwaymediablog, @amwayglobal, @amwaycanada, @amwayeurope, @artistrybeauty and @nutrilitehealth. When we broke the news that famed Chinese Olympic hurdler Liu Xiang will keep running for Team Nutrilite, or that many of our European markets launched new e-commerce sites and charitable efforts for UNICEF, we did so via Twitter.

Back on Facebook, home to 200 million active users, we are building presence for our exclusive E. Funkhouser New York cosmetics brand as well as Nutrilite’s Every Kick Counts campaign, starring global soccer phenom Ronaldinho. Even our “MoBEs.”

Sure, we’re on YouTube. Yes, the Opportunity Zone. Our hotel properties even joined the party, recently rewarding guests whenever they rate their stay on certain social networks. Said Chad LeRoux, director of corporate marketing for Amway Hotel Corp.:

“If you’re not engaged in this social media arena or arenas relative to your business, then you could be missing out on key opportune things that you may not be aware of that the populace is talking about. If you made this small tweak or modification to the product, it will enhance that product experience and thus create more-favorable opinion out there about you in those social media arenas, which in turn increases business.”

Of course, you can always find us here on this very blog, subscribe to our RSS feed and find us on Technorati, FriendFeed…the list goes on.

We hope our friends in the media are listening. Oh, and if you’re in town, we’ll drive you down to see the butterflies. Better make it fast: the exhibit winds down in two weeks.

Continuing coverage

Today’s Detroit News ran a story, “Bad economic times open door for direct sales: Ringing up opportunity,” which quotes executive vice president Jim Payne. The lead story on the business page, it’s a largely favorable piece about direct selling in these difficult economic times and depicts Amway as an industry leader. Jim is quoted in the article as saying:

When the economy goes bad, it does bode well for our industry. While it’s early in the year, we see solid evidence that more people are interested (in selling Amway products.)

Elsewhere, the National Law Journal features our very own general legal counsel, Mike Mohr, in an article entitled “Amway GC Lives the Dream.” The story lays out the scope and breadth of Mike’s global responsibilities and strategic focus to support Amway’s business around the world. Concerning our presence on the web, Mike responds:

[We] all live in a fishbowl. There are no secrets, but we have embraced the transparency.

But there’s more than mere legal chatter. Readers also learn that Mike was born an “army brat” and in later years transformed into a “motorhead…gearhead” who fancies pulp science fiction in his very spare time.
