Fast mover

Business is booming at Amway India, leading our affiliate to triple production at a Baddi facility to keep up with consumer demand.

We’ve operated in India for 10 years and are now among the biggest fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies there.

That makes us a fast mover in a market that’s moving fast.

Dateline: India

William S. Pinckney, managing director and CEO of Amway India Enterprises, opened our business there in 1998 and today is an active leader in some of India’s leading business forums.

Bill is part of Confederation of Indian Industry national committees on consumer affairs and “fast moving consumer goods” and is former chairman of the Indian Direct Selling Association. He’s also an increasingly prolific writer on business topics, having penned opinion pieces for major Indian newspapers.

In The Economic Times, India’s leading business and financial newspaper, Bill recently wrote:

By 2015, India’s consumer market will match that of Italy’s in absolute terms and by 2025 it will trail only those of the U.S., Japan, China and the U.K. Any body who is somebody has opened shop in India.

Bill’s not only got the dateline for India but the byline as well.

Bigger and better

In January Amway Malaysia moved into a new headquarters center in Petaling Jaya three times the size of its predecessor and built with sustainability in mind.

Our chairman Steve Van Andel and Amway Malaysia executive director Paul Yee joined  staff and distributors for the opening events for the center that includes offices, a product warehouse, and training facilities.

Malaysia isn’t the only Amway affiliate packing up and moving to a new locale. Amway Thailand just announced plans to build  a new facility to keep pace with our growing business there.  Managing director Preecha Prakobkit says the new headquarters, due for completion in 2012, is is just one demonstration of our commitment to “stay in the Thai direct selling market forever.”  Like the Malaysia center, the new Amway Thailand headquarters will be designed to minimize environmental impact.

It’s bigger and better facilities for Amway Malaysia and Thailand to support our booming businesses in those markets.

Up, up, and A(m)way

A little recognized side of our growing global operations - our Aviation Department - graces the cover and is featured in a five-page story in the January issue of Professional Pilot.  This comes on the heels of Amway Aviation being one of two flight operations honored for “outstanding flights” in 2009.

The headline - Amway uses broad mix of aircraft to develop opportunities and further company growth - pretty much tells the story of the significance of aviation to the company’s global expansion over the last 50 years.

”Without a flight department we wouldn’t be where we are…we surely would not be all over the world like we are,” said Amway co-founder Rich DeVos in the article.

Read about the team of 63 employees that  make ours one of the top corporate flight teams in the world.  They’re far and away among the best around.

Haiti relief by the numbers

In the days since the devastating January 12 Haiti earthquake, we’ve heard staggering numbers…3 million affected, tens of thousands dead, and countless others suffering.

But there have been hopeful numbers as well…of funds raised by hundreds of thousands of individuals and organizations and help provided by the thousands of volunteers who have raced to Haiti to aid the victims.

We’re proud to have helped in our own way by providing:

Help for Haiti is adding up, but the needs are great and increasing every day.

Sound advice

When Robert Pagliarini became an Amway distributor in 1995, he experienced a mindshift. His words:

“If you’ve never had your own business, you can’t understand what it feels like to be CEO of a company and to be responsible for marketing, generating clients, cash flow, recruiting, training, and all of the other hats an entrepreneur must wear.”

Today, Pagliarini writes for the CBS Moneywatch.com Human Capital section and is a frequent guest on Good Morning America and NPR’s Marketplace, offering financial and career advice.

He’s no longer a distributor, but 15 years later, Pagliarini penned a blog post titled Why You Should Join Amway. As he says, it’s the “easiest and quickest way to start your own business” and an opportunity worth considering.

Sound advice from someone who makes his living advising others.

Honorable mention

Candace MatthewsToday the CEO and other execs from Black Enterprise came to Amway’s World Headquarters in Ada to officially honor Candace Matthews  as the magazine’s Corporate Executive of the Year.

Matthews, Amway’s chief marketing officer since 2008, is the first leader at a privately-held company to receive the magazine’s annual honor.

In presenting the award,  Black Enterprise CEO Earl “Butch” Graves Jr. said of Matthews,  “through her business prowess and innovative thinking, she is helping transform Amway into a 21st century global powerhouse.”

This is definitely an honor worth mentioning.

Enterprising executive

Black Enterprise, September 2009

Candace Matthews has been commanding attention since becoming our chief marketing officer in 2008.

She created a global marketing council to guide company efforts worldwide.  She’s led the revitalization of our Nutrilite and Artistry product lines and breathed new life and energy into the Amway brand.   Candace even sang during our employee holiday program last year.

And now, she’s on the cover of a magazine on newsstands from coast-to-coast as Black Enterprise’s 2009 “Corporate Executive of the Year.” (PDF, 7MB)

Candace is the first exec at a privately-held company to receive the magazine’s annual honor.  She was selected for her “business prowess and inventiveness” and for forging a marketing approach that “blends innovation, technology and interpersonal relationships.”

And she’s in good company.  Executives at corporations like Ford, McDonald’s and CNBC also have received the magazine’s honor.

We knew Candace was enterprising.  Now she has the award to prove it.

Power player

For the second year, Amway executive vice president Eva Cheng has been named to the Forbes100 Most Powerful Women” list.

The list, which Forbes has compiled since 2004, is a virtual “who’s who” of the top women in business, government and entertainment worldwide. As Forbes says, the list isn’t about celebrity or popularity. It’s about a more precious commodity: influence.

Forbes calls Cheng “fierce in the boardroom and on the social circuit.”

We couldn’t agree more.

Eva joined Amway more than 30 years ago as a secretary in our Hong Kong office. Today she runs our biggest affiliate, China, which she launched in 1995, as well as our other Southeast Asian markets. Her leadership has made Amway one of the most admired companies and best employers in China.

Eva’s a power player on the Amway team. And according to Forbes, in the rest of the world as well.

Amway teams up with Orlando’s new sports and entertainment center

Amway CenterThe Orlando Events Center — the new venue for sports, concerts, and family entertainment — has had a “namelift.” As of today, it’s called the Amway Center.

The 875,000-square-foot facility, slated to open in the fall of 2010, will replace the nearby, two-decade old Amway Arena, a complex half the size. The Center will be the new home of the NBA’s Orlando Magic starting with the 2010-11 season.

Amway chief marketing officer Candace Matthews and Orlando Magic chief operating officer Alex Martins announced the naming today to a host of city dignitaries and the Orlando-area media. Said Matthews:

“We’re excited to continue this partnership with the Magic and Orlando, one of the world’s greatest tourist destinations. The NBA is one of the most popular sports leagues in the world. But this is much more than simply securing naming rights and continuing our partnership with the Magic. Rather, this takes us into partnership with the Orlando community, as we have partnered with other communities around the world where we do business, in aligning with our corporate vision of helping people live better lives.”
