It’s not news that the economy has slowed meeting and convention bookings nationwide. Things are no different here in Grand Rapids.
But the Amway Hotel Collection (AHC)—the Amway Grand Plaza Hotel, JW Marriott Grand Rapids, and Downtown Courtyard by Marriott—is generating some economic recovery of its own through meeting and travel stimulus packages. Through the end of the year, meeting planners booking events through 2012 can get incentives like free self-parking for overnight guests or special room rates and discounts on food and beverage. And AHC offers something not available any where else in Grand Rapids—1,100 rooms and a single host, making planning a meeting for 50 or 500 a breeze.
If your planning is more about a Labor Day getaway than a major meeting, Amway’s hotels are offering some sweet end-of-summer packages as well.
Grand Rapids is a swell place for a meeting or weekend trip. Even a Windy City reporter was wowed by Grand Rapids, calling our fair city an “ideal urban getaway” in a recent story.
And it’s a bargain, thanks to some economic stimulus plans.

Today’s Detroit News ran a story, “Bad economic times open door for direct sales: Ringing up opportunity,” which quotes executive vice president Jim Payne. The lead story on the business page, it’s a largely favorable piece about direct selling in these difficult economic times and depicts Amway as an industry leader. Jim is quoted in the article as saying:
When the economy goes bad, it does bode well for our industry. While it’s early in the year, we see solid evidence that more people are interested (in selling Amway products.)
Elsewhere, the National Law Journal features our very own general legal counsel, Mike Mohr, in an article entitled “Amway GC Lives the Dream.” The story lays out the scope and breadth of Mike’s global responsibilities and strategic focus to support Amway’s business around the world. Concerning our presence on the web, Mike responds:
[We] all live in a fishbowl. There are no secrets, but we have embraced the transparency.
But there’s more than mere legal chatter. Readers also learn that Mike was born an “army brat” and in later years transformed into a “motorhead…gearhead” who fancies pulp science fiction in his very spare time.

It’s a good morning in Ada, where we’ve just announced our annual results for 2008. As we enter our 50th anniversary year, we are proud to see some early and encouraging results of our corporate transformation. In this global climate, we’re certainly excited to share an increase of more than 15 percent in sales over last year. This year, two thirds of our markets grew, and more than half of our 58 worldwide affiliates posted increases of more than 10 percent. Truly, this year’s success was a global one.
We’re also proudly unveiling a new Amway Media Blog today. Throughout this year, there will be some visible changes as we unify the global direct selling business. This is one of them. We have now archived both the “old” Amway Media Blog and the Alticor Media Blog, but of course we’ll still answer any questions on topics we previously covered.
Going forward, we will be able to relay the news that matters most at Amway through one voice, here at this site. Here’s the news of the day:
