By leaps and bounds

Two Amway talent development  programs have been recognized by leading organizations for excellence and innovation.

LeAP (Leadership Acceleration Program) is an action-learning process that brings a select group of our top-performing execs from around the world together to tackle real business challenges. This program has been honored as an executive development learning leader  by Bersin & Associates. And our Global Leadership Certificate Program, a partnership with Davenport University and Harvard Business Publishing, was cited as a best practice in corporate-academia partnership by Corporate University Xchange.

It’s well-deserved recognition for programs that are helping us grow our talented workforce by leaps and bounds.

Making the list

Citing her as an “innovative strategist and visionary,”  the Grand Rapids Business Journal included Amway’s chief marketing officer Candace Matthews on its 2010 list of  the ”50 Most Influential Women in West Michigan.”

She joins leaders in business, government, education, and organizations on the roster, which since 1997 has sought to recognize women who are making a difference in our community.

Candace and the other 49 winners are being honored today for making the list, and for their individual and collective contributions to West Michigan.

Clean and green

espring-logo1Our eSpring Water Purifier is already known as clean - it provides pure water to consumers around the  world.  It was the first water purifier to be tested and certified by NSF International to meet NSF/ANSI Standards 42, 53 and 55B.

Now eSpring is clean and green.  The Society for Plastics Engineers has named Amway and eSpring one of the winners of its 2010 Environmental Stewardship Awards.

The newly redesigned eSpring unit, launching this spring in Japan, has less plastic content, uses nearly half the energy of the previous model and has reduced its global warming potential by 46 percent.

And it does all this while providing exceptionally clean, great-tasting water.

The award is great recognition of our R&D team’s commitment to creating high-performing products while minimizing environmental impact.   In other words, making products like eSpring clean and green.

Spreading the word

Candace Matthews became Amway’s chief marketing officer in 2008 to help spread the word about the company’s brands.

Now Candace is the one getting considerable word-of-mouth.

Since being named Black Enterprise magazine’s Corporate Executive of the Year in September, Candace has been the focus of a number of profiles.  The latest is a video feature on the Black Enterprise Business Report, a syndicated show airing on broadcast and cable stations in more than 25 markets.

If you think this buzz is impressive, just wait until you see what she’s doing with our brands.

No longer under radar

Our aviation team operates quietly, capably and professionally.  They do their jobs without a lot of attention or fanfare.

But that’s about to change, as Amway aviation moves from operating under radar to getting major recognition as one of two inaugural winners of the Gulfstream Outstanding Flight Award given for flights involving superior airmanship.

Amway was honored for transporting more than 1,100 people using 22 aircraft in a single day as part of the company’s 50th anniversary events in May.

We’re in good company.  The other honoree is the  U.S. Air Force’s 310th airlift squadron.  The two teams were cited for  performing significant real-world business and special-mission aviation operations using Gulfstream aircraft and as representing the “very best” flight operations in the world.

And the “very best” can’t operate under radar for very long.

Honorable mention

Candace MatthewsToday the CEO and other execs from Black Enterprise came to Amway’s World Headquarters in Ada to officially honor Candace Matthews  as the magazine’s Corporate Executive of the Year.

Matthews, Amway’s chief marketing officer since 2008, is the first leader at a privately-held company to receive the magazine’s annual honor.

In presenting the award,  Black Enterprise CEO Earl “Butch” Graves Jr. said of Matthews,  “through her business prowess and innovative thinking, she is helping transform Amway into a 21st century global powerhouse.”

This is definitely an honor worth mentioning.

Enterprising executive

Black Enterprise, September 2009

Candace Matthews has been commanding attention since becoming our chief marketing officer in 2008.

She created a global marketing council to guide company efforts worldwide.  She’s led the revitalization of our Nutrilite and Artistry product lines and breathed new life and energy into the Amway brand.   Candace even sang during our employee holiday program last year.

And now, she’s on the cover of a magazine on newsstands from coast-to-coast as Black Enterprise’s 2009 “Corporate Executive of the Year.” (PDF, 7MB)

Candace is the first exec at a privately-held company to receive the magazine’s annual honor.  She was selected for her “business prowess and inventiveness” and for forging a marketing approach that “blends innovation, technology and interpersonal relationships.”

And she’s in good company.  Executives at corporations like Ford, McDonald’s and CNBC also have received the magazine’s honor.

We knew Candace was enterprising.  Now she has the award to prove it.

A round of applause

Amway would like to congratulate president Doug DeVos and chief marketing officer Candace Matthews for having received prestigious national honors.

Doug accepted the Circle of Honor Award, the highest honor given by the Direct Selling Education Foundation, last Tuesday in Washington D.C. The award recognizes outstanding leadership to the foundation. From Doris Christopher, DSEF chair:

“Doug has been a real leader, a visionary and a voice of reason for the foundation.”

Also last week, Candace was inducted into the Executive Leadership Council, one of the most prestigious associations of African American corporate officers of Fortune 500 companies. Steve Van Andel, Amway’s chairman. proclaimed:

“Amway is proud to work with Candace, and proud to see others recognize her leadership and track record.”

Truly, news to be proud of!

Gifted and glossy in Korea

Amway Korea shares center stage with Korean Air, Yuhan-Kimberly, KIA Motors and Hyundai Insurance in the 17th Annual Korean Marketing Frontier Awards, presented by the Korean Marketing Association.

Why, you may ask, is this newsworthy? Amway Korea was the only direct selling company to win an award in any category this year. In addition, the KMA is represented by approximately 60 universities and industrial communities. Receiving an award from an academically-based body in Korea is held with very high regard.

Yong-Hwan Roh, senior marketing director for Amway Korea, accepted the award in the cause-related marketing category on behalf of the company. The KMA considered the Amway One by One Campaign for Children’s “Health Watcher”, “Amway Charity Playground” as well as the Nutrikids soccer team as successful examples of educating elementary school children about healthy living.
